HOW LONG?
THE PERIOD OF ENLISTMENT.
The Minister of Defence was asked .1 question in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. R. M'Callum as to the term for which our soldiers have been engaged. Mr. M'Calluim was under the impression that New Zealanders- were enlisted for "three years or the duration of the war/' as in England, and as the term of three years is nearing completionihe asked the Minister to explain the position to the House. Sir James Allen said that in the Expeditionary Forces Act the period of enlistment is defined as "for the period of the present war with Germany and six months thereafter, or such shorter period as the Government thinks fit." It might be necessary to extend the period of six months because it might not be possible to get all the men back to New Zealand within six months after the end of the war. ' '
