TRENTHAM RACES
TOE WINTER MEETING
MASTER STROWAN'S STEEPLECHASE
KAURI KING WINS FLEET HANDICAP The Winter Meeting of the Wellington Eacing Club was advanced a further utago .yesterday, when the weather was glorious. A big crowd was present, aud more pcoplo patronised tho trains. The racing was full of surprises, and in at least three ovents tho winners .showed greatly improved form as compared with the first day. There were several- falls, but none of the riders wero injured. A very promising steeplechaser in Czaronua came to grief in the big Steeplechase, and met with injuries which' necessitated his destruction. Tho totalisator staff had a very busy lime, amt CFvo total for iho day was .034,235, coffipared with £Mi,iV) for the corresponding day last year.
Penniless, Sensitive, aud Thraco had tlio pen-put through , their names for tlio Corunna Hurdles. Kohinahina was a better favourllo than Miss Sation, whilo thero was good money for Compulsion and Swln■ton. At. the first fence, Compulsion lost his rider, and Marvelito made play from Brown Loch and a bunched field. At tho half-mile San Sebastian was under a strong jmll and took charge entering the straight. Bidden out, ho beat Miss Sation by % couple of longths, with Swinton well up. Glendalough, Kukri, aud Yarilla were the next to finish; - -
Tip Up was considerably better pupported to-day than yesterday, and after celtinir off Jiadly he ran in an easy winner. Eaumarruwhiri was left at tho post, and the whole field caught the webbing. Bairnsdalo, Croesus, and Hyllus were prominent on to the course proper, but in the straight Hegarty brought- Tip Up through, -won easily. Thero was a srreat struggle for second place, Hyllup, fiairnsdale, and Eockfiold crossing in a lino. The last-named just failed to get up. The winner's performance was d?ddedljj better than on the opening day, when it'was not queried by the paid officials. .• . ' , . Flying Camp, Aratiatia, and Marconi were the scratchinga in tho Jumpers' Flat Handicap. The top-weight, Prince .Dela-' ware, who had the Eervices of S. Eeid, wan Sood favourite, but after being well ;. X into the straight he failed to como
and could only finish fourth. Iccbcrjr j; from behind in tho straight, and beat Thrace, who had been in front from the fix furlongs. Master Timi/was closo up. and then in a line came Prince Delaware and Moulu.i Want reared up when the barrier rose, and lost a lot of ground. Humorist was bettor backed than Hygia in the Selling Eace. At tho barrier special attention was paid by tho'starter and his assistant to Petruchio, who was playing un badly. Ho began smartly from tho outside, and was soon on the rails. Ho !ed all the way, and won from the favourite, with Rumania next and Undecided fourth. The winner wan sold, after, t.lm race to Mr. A. Groves, owner of Union Jack, for 115' guineas.
Tilrkby was a better favourite, than' Kiwitea in'the Brooklyn-Steeplechase. At the start Tauira led, but- bumped his rider off at the second fence. Czaromis fell at Ihe post and rails, and had to be. doFtrnyed. Klrkby led till sis furlonirs from home, when Kiwitpa. and Master Strowan joined him, and the pair cleared out. by themselves. Master- Strowcn had most rare on the flat, but Kiwitea rqualit».d this at the fences. A great race to tho last fence saw. both ripe together; but in the run homo Master Strowan won by.a balf-lensth. Fagot was a. poor third, aud the only others to finish were Collector and Brewer: Kirkby fell at the last fence.
The Peninsula Handicap was a splendid rffittlne race, tho' first'five horses on the machine bein? evenly bapked; Xt tho start Kimbolton led Nobleman, Charley, ana , Merrie Pofo. Enterine /ho straight, Nobleman ran wid«, n.ud Rli: Aunos sot up on the fence, and a.ftcr a. good se.t-fo between the pair Sir A?nes won br a, leniJlh. Nobleman wa6 well clear* of Blaolc Hill, who was in a lino with Don Pacifico'and Sunshade. ' ■ ' '•" '-•
The totalioator bad a busy time in the Fleet Handicap, the majority of the runners being well supported,- At the start Lady Louisa led Goldstreamj • but at. the half-mile' Kauri'King-'joined Goldstream in the lead, and the pair were first into the straight, with Orleans and Toki neil. Goldstream faded at the distance,, but Kauri King finished full of running, and
won nicely by two lengths from Orlcnnp. Toki was thn name distance away, with Centre- fourth, ami then in a. liuu came iTceltap. .fold-el-lvubr. and (Towstream. Thn winner ban been racing most, consistently of lato, and is always a better borso for a> race.
A very close, finish funk nlaro in Iho Pctono Handicap, for, which ][uuiorist> who had raced earlim- in Uin tiny, and Hobiir declined their engagement. Thn top-weight, 'Kilkec, was :l pood favourite, but ho pla.yod up at tho barrier, and was put, mi the outside. From a. good start, Whatalina, on tho rails, and Rajput, on llio outside, woro (inickesf, to begin, and the pair wero together when tho course proper was reached. Down tho straight Whakatina and Rajput wero challenged by Comment and Bloomine, and in a great finish Gomment won by a head from Eajput, with Bloominc a neck away and Whaltatina right up., Thn winner was making her first appearance at tho meeting-, and her owner was very Panffuiuc that she would acquit herself well.
