"Why is.butter sold retail in Wellington at Is. Bd. per lb. under Government regulation, and in Auckland at is. sd. per lb., in a State-governed 6hop?''. asked Dr. A. K. Newman (Wellington East) of the Prime Minister. Mr. Massey replied that retailers were at liberty to sell at whatever prices they chose as long as the gazetted maximum was not exceeded. Butter could be. bought in most of the chief centres to-day at Is. 6d. per lb. Por instance, butter was selling in Wanganui at Is. 4d. per lb., Wellington and Auckland at Is. 5d., and Timaru at Is. Gd.
