SEIIVICE OF THE MEN ON TIiANSPOBTS. The monthly meeting of tho executive committee ofi tho Wellington,! Branch of tho Navy Leaguo was held yesterday afternoon. Thero wore present: Messrs. J. B. Uarcourt (in tho chairjj R. Darrocli, C. IV. Smith, A. Wtien, Barry Keesing, C. W. Palmer, Mesdanies Hall Thompson, Bradnoy Williams, C. K Richardson, and Miss Speed. llepresentatious wero mado to the league to the eifoct that married New Zealand sailors serving in. H.M. Navy, whose Imperial pay is supplemented by tho New Zealand Government, aro not entitled to separation allowance. The branch was asked to make representations to the Government on the question, and tho meeting decided to communicate with the Minister of Defence urging that separation allowance should bp given.
Beferriiig to a suggestion from the Christeliurch Branch to hold a conference of New Zealand Navy League branches, a eub-conimitteo consisting of Messrs. Smith, Harcourt, and tho hon. secretary was set up to interview Mr. Massey and SiT Joseph Ward to ascertain if they approve of such, a couferenco being hold, and to invito thorn, in tho event of the conference- taking place, to address tho meeting.
Mr. Charles Darling wroto expressing regret at'his inability to visit Wellington for tho purpose of giving a series of lantern slide addresses. He, however, forwarded a 'list of lantern. Slides, aud tho solcction, was therefrom by Mr. Darroch was approved. Bopresontations were made by Mr. It. J. Marks, now serving , in the Expeditionary forces, who was. previously en-,-gaged in transport work, to tho effect that men serving on tho transports did not receive any recognition of their ser-. viocs to their country, after receiving their discharge. ■Ho pointed out that when a soldier returns he is eorved with a badge, which indicates that ho has done service, and he expressed the opinion that men who work on tho transports aro serving their country in the eame spirit as tho inen serving in tho Expeditionary Forces, and should receive similar recognition. Ho asked tho branch to approach tho GoTornment with tho view of securing something wliich will show, that thoso who have served on transport work have at least dono their duty to thoir country. Tho meoting decided to bring , tho matter, under the notice of the Minister of Defence.
Tho Auckland Branch, -wrote forwarding a. copy of the following resolution which wns carried at a recent roeeting\of their exeoutivo committee:—"That in view of the great benefit of sea power Iα Groat Britain in. tho past, and tho absolute necessity for increased ecu power for the protection, of our extended Imperial Einpiro in tho future, the , secretary ,bo instructed to communicate with tho other branches of. tho Navy League throughout the Dominion to ask their co-operation in urging tho Minister of liducation to mako the question of Etnpiro sea power a part of our national school oui'riculum, that the vital necessity of naval protection may bo inculcated in. the minds of our school children by lectures and other aids, so that this great question may be' viewed wjth intelligent interest by the rising- goneration." Tho meeting expressed approval of the resolution, tut considered that the question -was one which should bo dealt with at the conference of branches. Tho education eub-committee reported on the recent essay competition. It was also reported that school branches had Iwon formed at Scots College, Fitzherbert Street School, Whenuakura School, Car-' terton District High School, and that branches wero beingformed at the Karori and lit. Mrs. Hall Thompson reported on tho activity of. tho Ladies' Auxiliary. Sho mentioned that the spinnory had been established without touching the money that was set apart for this purpose. She also reported on the Ladiee' Auxiliaries which had recently been established at Picton and Carterton, and also mentioned that the ladies' workroom had been visited by the Countess of Liverpool and Lady Ward, who expressed great pleasure at tho work being done there.
A sul>committeo consisting of Messrs. Keesing, Palmer, and Darrooh -was eet up to aot with tho Indies for tlio? purpose of mating arrangements in connection with tho address to be given by Mr. C. J. Parr, C.M.G., on his visit to tho Grand Fleet. Half of the proceeds of the lecture will be dovoted to the Palmer Prize Fund. ,
It was decided to forward a frozen wreath to bo placed at the foot of the column in Trafalgar Square, London, on Nelson Day, and Mr. Palmer undertook to make all.tho arrangements in connection therewith.'
