MATTERS OF INTEREST FROM FAE AND NEAB.
Victoria College Entertainment. In connection witli tho cupping celebrations of Victoria University College, mi interesting function was bold at Victoria College on Friday afternoon, when tlio V.U.C. braduntce' Association "avo a ten in honour of the graduates of th« year. .1 lie tables were prettily decorated with the college colours,'green and gold and with spring flowers in tlio same shades. About 50 graduates and the professors were present. Mr. Eichelbanm, the president of the association, welcomed the new graduates, many of whom were in khaki. Mr. Clement Watson chairman of the College Council, made icehng reference to the. graduates who were unable to be present on account of being at the front, and to those who have fallen in battle. Professor Garroiv also wished the new graduates good luck, especially those in camp. Mr. HallJones, who has returned from the front, replied on behalf of the new graduates in a very interesting speech, giving his experiences in Egypt and Gallipoli ami showing how the college traditions link nil old students together. An pnjovable hour was brought to a close by the'sin"ing of the National Anthem. Gift Goods to Soldiers.
Captain Burgin, in a lecture delivered in Auckland, said he wished to testify to the usefulness and value of tho gift parcels sent 'through the Dominion gift scheme to the soldiers, and to say how greatly they were needed and p<- M-eciated by the men in the trenciies. T "'"■ rtichs were just what the men neeaeu. The gifts constituted a direct link between the men in tho trenches and the people at homo in New Zealand.
Captain Burgin delivered a message from General Richardson, who said: "Tell the people of the Dominion to send us as much more of the provisions of New Zealand as they can, because the food shortage in Great Britain will be serious later on."
"There is a question among the women of Now Zealand," said Captain Burgin, "whether tho goods or tho money to purchase them should le sent, I say, without hesitation, goods every time. I do not mean that jnoney is not needed; that can bo sent under a different scheme, as is dono now. The point is that the New Zealand m.inufnctureii Roods, which are sent under the Dominion Gift Scheme (Lady Liverpool Funds, etc.), are a relish and comfort to tho men in the trenches, and the tit-bits and the change of food aro greatly appreciated." Ho also stated that tho goods arrive in good condition, even after the delav that sometimes must take place. Ho also said that the- number of parcels sent, away monthly would havo to be doubled nnd even trebled, before, there was a sufficient numiier for each man at the front to receive one. That means that the public of Now Zealand must support the scheme far more liberally 'than it is ifoing now if if: wishes all tho soldiers to bo treated alike. Surprisingly few parcels are lost and the waslago is very small.
Mrs. Thomas and Mr. E. Thomas, also Mr. and Mrs. A. Woolford, 'of Vakilu. leura, aro at present visiting Wellington, nnil are slaying at the New Commercial Hotel.
