BUTTER-FAT LEVY
QUUSTiOiNS OF DIFFICULT!',
A conference regarding the butter-fat levy wilt bo held to-day between tiie Itaaid o£ Trade, and the iiutter ana Oieese Producers' Committee. One of the iiuestions to be discussed will be the amount of the equalisation payments to be made out of the fund provided by the levy to suppliers of the local market. At the outset it was nevei , contemplated that there would. be difficulty in doteruiinins what this payment should be. The local price was fixed, and it was presumed that the export price would be easily ascertainable. jS'ow the question is a, very difficult one. The Loudon price is higher than was contemplated, and it is known accurately enough, but the fact is that the exporters cannot get the London price because they canuot get their butter carried to London. It is probably true'that holders of butter would be willing to accept rather less than the equivalent of the London price if they could quit their holdings. Under these circumstances it is not a simple matter to determine exactly what is a fail export vahie' on which equalisation payments should be made.
