Dr. T. .TTopo Lowis, of Auckland, died suddenly there yesterday morning. At the time of his death he held tho position of consulting physician to tho forces, with tho rank of Lieut.Colonel, and in that capacity was a recent visitor to Trentham Camp. Ho was present at the opening of the new ward presented to the camp by the Wellington Racing Club, when he was looking in the best of health, and said that lie felt very well. Dr. Lewis was a clever surgeon wno will l>e missed in Auckland. It was" he who recently operated on tho brain of a young criminal serving a life sentence for murder, and as the Tesult it was hoped tlwt the lad would bo freed from what has boon considered to be "a strongly-developed criminal instinct," but what was really the pressure of an ossified growth on the brain as the result of a fall -when a child.
Lieut.-Colonel A. Samuel, who recently returned from service with the New Zealand troops in the Mediterranean theatre of war, was present at a New Zealand Club luncheon yesterday, and was given a very hearty welcome by members. Indeed, the President of the club said that on some later occasion the club might be glad of a talk from Colonel Samuel.
Mr. Winter Hall, formerly of the Plimmer-Hall Comedy Company, is now playing before the camera for the LaskyFamous Players Corporation in Los Angeles, California.
At a luncheon of the New Zealand Club yesterday, the president made reference to the death of Mr. R. B. Davis, tho senior vice-president of the -club. A resolution of■ condolence with tho widow and relatives was passed by the members.
Tho Rev. R. E. Davies, of Knox Church, Dunedin, has received a cable message from Sydney announcing the death of Sir Matthew Harris, uncle of Mrs. Davies Sir Matthew was born in Comity Deny (Ireland) in 1840, and was educated at the Sydney Grammar School and University. He was Mayor of Sydney in IS9S, 1899, and 1900, and wns ai; one time a member of the Legislative Assembly. He was created a Knight Bachelor (K. 8.) in 1899.
Mr. .T. Speedy, Belmont, of the Twenty, seventh Reinforcements, was presented with a wristlet watch and gladstone bag by liis friends, who wished him every success.
