THE GISBORNE MURDER
ARREST AND DEATH OF TE WHERO. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, June l'i. Abraham Te Where, wanted for the murder of his wife in Sunday evening, was arrested in a woolshed on Mr. John ■ Machell's Awapuni property, m tho suburbs of Gisborne, this afternoon. Hβ was very cold and wet, having been out in the heavy rain all night. ; The police noticed that he looked ill, but attributed it to exposure. However, about six o'clock it became apparent that something serious was tho matter, and the prisoner- was removed to tho Hospital, where he died at 8.20 p.m. He admitted that he murdered his wife, and expressed penitence. Iβ Whero fitated that he drauk the contents of a bottle which he found in the woolshed. this morning. He believed it contained water, and had no idea the contents were Inqnesfc on Mrs. Te Whero opened this afternoon, and, after the hearing or formal evidence, was adjourned till tomorrow. . .. Dr. Scott gave evidence that the woman had Teceiyed two exceptionally ■ violent blows on the back and left sido ; of the head. The wounds corresponded with the size of an axe. : Both parties formerly lived at Hastings, where Te Whero kept tasicabs ami Mr* Te Whero kept a restaurant. _ le ' WhOTO about seven years ago received JCI3 000 os his share, of the purchase monev of the Waunarama Estate. Hβ is stated to have gone througn -ho money iu less than a year. The couple had frequent quarrels over money, ane it is stated that this led to tho tragedy.
