' ■ : The death occurred at his residence at Miraiuar on Thursday of Mr. W. a Hooker, a well-known messenger in the employ of the Post and Telegraph De-: partment in Wellington for.many years, The deceased, -who was 58 years of age, i 'succumbed to an attack of pleurisy and pneumonia. Mr. Cederholm, manager of the Gis-: borne Freezing Company's works, js a. visitor to Wellington. Laucc-Corporal Henry M. T. T. Levinge, of the New Zealand ltiflo Brigade, who was killed in action on March Ii» was a son of Stafl-Surgeou H. Levinge.of Wairoa, and a nephew of Dr. Levinge, of the staff of the Porirua Mental Hospital. He took part in the Somme battle, and came through it with only a scratch:on tho cheek from a shrapnel bullet. Deceased was the third member of tl.e :Lerage family to give his life iu the present war. The first to fall was Mr Richard Levinge, Bart., of Knockdnn Castle, Mullingar, Ireland, which has been the seat of the Levinge family for 200 years. Sir Eichard was in the JEirst Life Guards. Another, a'lieutenant in.the Imperial Army, was killed eight months ngo. Dr. Levinge has received a letter from a comrade of "his eons in ths Eifle Brigade, expressing the warm sympathy of the corps in his loss. . His son, Mr. Car-, lyle Smythe, is a man of marked literary ability. The presentation on Thursday evening to Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, Mayor of Petone, took tho form of a. gold watch engraved, and Mrs..M'Ewan was present-; ed with a silver tea-service on an oak tray, to which was attached a plate engraved as follows:—"Presented by the citizens of Petone to Mrs. J. W. M'Ewau for her good work as Mayoress, 1907-I*. , Mr M'Ewan was also handed a wellfilled wallet, the proceeds of the evening's gathering. Captain W. H. Hawkins, of Paliiatna. is still an inmate of Chelsea. Hospital, whilst his son, Percy, who left with the Main Body, is in the Walton-on-Thanira Hospital, having been wounded in France. An old colonist and military veteran, Captain J. W. Kenah, died at his residence "at Epsom last week. Captain' Konah was born at Goughal, County r Cork, Ireland, in 1812, and came to jVcw : Zealand as a boy. He enlisted in the Military Settlers' Corps during the Maori War. and saw fighting at the Bay of Plenty, Pipiriki, and Taranak,, rismfi to the captaincy of the Wairoa Kifle Volunteers. Returning to Ireland in.1874, he married • the daughter .of Mr. Nicholas Boland, high sheriff of Cork City; The return.passage was made in. the sailing ship St. Leonards.
