FOOD RIOTS IN LISBON
PROVISION SHOPS SACKED. (Rec. May 27, 5.5 p.m.)
''The Times' !' correspondent at Madrid London, May 26. states: "A riot broke out at Lisbon and lasted four days. The outbreak was due to the syndicalists and working classes resenting the sudden increase in tho prices of bread and potatoes. The provision shops were sacked, including fortythree belonging to Spaniards. Serious damage was done to private property. The riots were suppressed by martial law and onorgetic action by the troops. The casualties totalled twenty-five killed' an.d one hundred and fifty wounded. Three hutfdred arrests were made, eighty being women. It is stated that the Monarchial Party was in nowise responsible for the disturbance, which had no political significance, being solely: due to economic distress."—The "Times."
