The sch.«ner Huanui arrived at Dunedin this morning from Whaugapo, after a passage of 13 days. The vessel encountered the recent stormy weather on the WeEt Ooast, anil was ]iovc-to for several days . owing to iho mountainous sejis, but was j not damaged. j ALTERATIONS TO TABAWERA. J - Adrice has been received in Wellington j that tho passenger and cargo steamer j Tarawera is to be converted into a cargo j steamer proper. Tho Tarawera, a very well-known vessel of some 2003 tonß, was. built in 1882 for her present her first service was running excursions to the West Ooast Sounds. Later, she went on tho intercolonial running, and to the coastal trade. Tlie decision of the TJniou Coinpay to use her for cargo only in the future 'has been expected, lor although the passenger service on the Coast has not remained the same, tin.difficulty with cargo is generally to_fin~s space, not to fill it. Tie Tarawera/s withdrawal will not seriously hamper the East and South Coast passenger service; for there are now three steamers on tho southern, and one on the East Coastfunuing. These are ample to cope with tho passenger traffic, and it is probable thai, . another cargo boat will taks the TarAwera's place. Tho alterations to the Tarawora will be made when the vessel arrives south at Dunedin, for which port left liero last evening, via Lyttelton. She will lay up and bo placed in (lie builder's hands immediately. NOTICE TO MARINERS. The following notice to mariners appeared in the latest Gazette :-Several masters of oversea ships from .Panama to Auckland have recently been making tho mistake of thinking that Cuvicr Island is a signalstation wiih telegraphic' communication with the mainland. This is not so, as there is no telegraph communication ■ with tho mainland. They should instead, when coming to Auokland, communicate with Tiritiri Signal-station. Charts, etc.. effected: Admiralty Charts Nos. 3565 and 1 1998; "New Zealand Pilot," eighth edition, } 1908, Chapters ii and iv, pages 34 and 99.
Durinc the morning the Orepuki is due from Lyttelton. Hhc is fixed to leave tins' evening for Kelson and Nydia Bay. Early next week the John should reach Wellington from Wanganui. At present the vessel loading at Greymouth for Wanganui, and Wellington will bo her next port after Wanganui. The Karu left Greymouth for ■Wellington jestorday. and is due to-day or to-morrow. On completion of discharge the vessel leaves for Nelson and New Plymouth. At midnight last night the Kittawa was to have left Wcstport for Wellington. She has a full oargo of coal to discharge. Her future movements aro indefinite. Owing to, yesterday's rough weather the Hinoraoa did not go out to the Cook Strait lighthouses, and it will probably be eariy next week before she gets away. If she weather is sufficiently fine on Sunday evening she will leave then. With sorgo thousands of crates of cheeso and boxes of butter the Corinna left New Plymouth for Wellington yesterday, and arrived yesterday afternoon. She receives cargo till 10.30 a.m. to-day for Dunedin, Timaru, and Oamaru.
