A Beuter cable message from London records the death, of Sir Alexander Kichardson Binnie, president of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
The Rev. George W. J. Sponcc, for very many yeara a well-known Methodist minister in Now Zealand, died at Auckland on Sunday night (states a Pre3S Association, message). The Eev. Mr. Spence began his ministry at Wairoa, Auckland district, in 1879, and in 1882 he was appointed to North Shore, Auckland. Hβ subsequently continued his labours at Gisborne, Oamaru, Dunedin, Napier, Groymouth , Eangitikei, Blenheim, Auckland East, Wanganui district, and Thames. He was district chairman of the Wangnnui district from 1910 to 3913, and was elected president of 'the Methodist Conference in 1911. In March last year ho was superannuated on the ground of ill-health, after a ministry of 37 years. The Methodist Conference passed a resolution deeply regretting tie inability to further continue his active service, and expressed its deep sense of the value of the work ho had rendered to the Church during Iho long period mentioned. "His ministry has been at all times marked," stated the resolution, "by unselfish devotion and uutirinß zeal, and has been attended with much success; and as a preacher, pastor, and administrator he has earned a good degree." Courtesy and kindliness wore mnTked features of his nature. Captain Spence, of the hospital ship Maheno, is .i son. and Mrs. Battey, wife of the Eev. Percy Battey, at present in.tho Awapuui Camp, is a dnlighter.
Mt. T. 'M. Wilford, M.P., has resigned the chairmanship of the Wellington Patriotic Society. It is possible that his successor will bo announced at this evoning's mooting of tho society.
Tffr. B. H. W. Bligh, lecturer for the White Cross league, arrived in Wellington yesterday, and will leave for the south to-night. s
Mr. Scott Colvillc arrived from Auckland yesterday in connection with a theatrical enterprise.
