BOEOUGH COUNCIL MEETING

The first business meeting of tlio new Borough Council was held at Karon on Tuesday. Mr. B. G. H. Buroi (Mayor) presided, and the followiiiK councillors were present:—Messrs. A. Hamilton, W. G. Bradnock.H. Dryden, 'Flanagan, J. Mackenzie, T. W. Henderson, T. Lew|>r, Tingey, and \V. A circular received from the Alexandra Borough Council stated that at a publio meeting at Alexandra resolutions had been passed expressing tho opinion that the Government has not made «lequate monetary provision for soldiers and their "dependants, and that tlio. time has arrived for "national service."

The Mayor romarked that for his part he preferred to leave such matters to the Government. "Everyone with a little fad sends a resolution and wants us to support it," said Councillor Henderson. Tho letter was merely "received."

The Minister of Internal Affairs advised the council that it was not considered necessary to bring down further legislation to control the exhibition of film-plays. There was adequate provision in the Film Censorship Act to provent objectionable pictures from being shown. The council itself had. moreover power to prohibit the exhibition within tho borough of any objectionable pesters. The council decided to thank the Minister for what it considered a fully satisfactory reply to its representations-

A petition from Amv Street residents drew attention to tho state of _ the thoroughfare, and asked the council to effect improvements before the winter weather sets in. It was decided to have the Works Committee inspect the street. The Works Committee recommended that the Hockey Association's permission be asked to have Nos. 3. and i grounds improved. The committee suggested that potatoos mis;ht be sown on the grounds, and that the grounds might afterwards-bo reWelled. The council decided to submit the suggestion to ,the association. Accounts amounting to £440 12s. 7d. were passed for payment.
