THE MINERS' STRIKE
RESUMPTION OF WORK EXPECTED GOVERNMENT MADE NO CONCESSIONS Reports .that reached Wellington on Saturday indicated that the miners employed at the State coal-mines had decided to resume work. They struck last week as a protest against an alteration in the Railway Department's arrangements regarding workmen's tickets) and demanded that the old scale should be reintroduced. Tho Government explained that the change, objected to by the miners was simply a part of tho scheme for releasing railwaymen for military service, and that the miners must stand on the same footing as other sections of the community. The men, it is reported, have accepted this position. ■Tho Acting-Prime- Minister (Sir James Allen) told a Dominion reporter last night that he understood the i ers had resolved to resume work i..is morning. He hoped there would b'e no further hitch in connection with the operation of the mines. The stoppages had already put the Government and the public generally to a great deal of inconvenience, and it was most desirable that at the present critical time in the progress of the war there should not bo any loss of efficiency at any point. ■ . . ■ ■ ■ .
In answer to a further, question, Sir James Allen said that the Government had not made any concession to the miners with regard.to the-railway The_ miners were in precisely the same position as other sections of the workers. ' ' '
