. The Rev. Father La'Croix, of Greymouth, has. been appointed captainchaplain to the next Reinforcement draft to leave the Dominion.

A well-known resident, of Wellington, Mr. Joseph Berman, of the firm of J. and M. Borman, Lambton Quay, died at a private hospital on Friday.. Although only a young man, the late Mr. Berman suffered from indifferent health, andisome weeks ago an operation was found necessary. This was followed by a gradual failure in the patient, but his death was not anticipated by his l many friends.

Johnston, with only a handful of men, captured a Turkish battery in the face of heavy odds, and took.a number of prisoners.Sir Francis Burnand, whose death was reported yesterday, presided over the editorial destinies of .London "Punch" for 26 years-1880 till 1906.

Mr. J. W. Smith, of Petone, who received word last year that his son, P.to. Smith, was missing, has now received advice that'as the result of a Court of Inquiry it has been ascertained that Pte. Smith was killed in September last. ' ■ A very well-known resident of Palmerston North, Mr. William Stubbs, died there suddenly on Monday night from hemorrhage of the brain. He was attending a picture theatre and complained of a headache. He went out into the fresh-air, and was picked up unconscious a short time afterwards and removed to his home; where he expired a few hours later. His two sons, Lieutenant T. Stubbs and SergeantMajor D. Stubbs, are at the front. He also left a widow and one daughter. Mr. Stubbs was secretary of the Palmerston Hospital Board, a member of the High School Board.of Governors, and member of tho Technical School Board. Two of his brothers and a sister also live in Palmerston.

The 'King's Police Medal has been awarded to Mr. John Cullen, 1.5.0., late Commissioner of Police of New Zealand. The official announcement states that Mr. Cullen "passed through all ranks to his present position.

Mr. Kwoi Chili, who till a short time aco was Chinese Consul in. New Zealand, audi resided in Wellington with his wife and son, has been appointed to the Chinese Consulate at Manila, Philippine Islands. News has beeii received that Mr. Kwei has already arrived at his new post.
