DEMAND FOR HOUSEHOLD COAL
WOr BUSH 01' ORDERS. Some of the coalyards in and around ■Wellington arc practically out of supplies already. They had a rush of orders last week, very many people wishing to lay in stocks of coal. The dealers sought' generally to givo preference to their regular customers, but even then the available- supplies' would not go very far.' Delivery was an additional difficulty. Tha carters could not cover the ground quickly euougb, and some eager buyers were seen moving sacks of coal, to their homes in their own wheelbarrows. The demand for firewood has been keen, and apparently it will remain unsatisfied. Wellington never carries largo stocks of firewood. Enormous supplies could be secured from the Rimutakas and the Jlanawatu if transport and labour were obtainable at reasonable prices. But as a matter of fact the timber /which is worth very little on the ground—many settlers would be glad to givo it away to anybody who .would remove, it—cannot be brought to the city except at almost prohibitive cost.
