REDUCTION OF ONE-HALF
THE DINING CARS

In the staff-saving scheme already published'it was calculated that a reduction of about one-third' had been made in the number of train miles to be run. The 'coal-saving scheme provides for a reduction of one-half. The new timetable will be very like that already announced, but some of the trains will have to be deleted from it, among them tho few evening trains left in the schedules for suburban lines. ' As. the object of this latest cut Js not , primarily the saving of men, it Is not the intention of-the Department to ' continue-at once the running of tho dining-cars on the oxpress trains. That change will be allowed to stand over j until : tho staff-saving time-table is in- . f- | troduced early in May. There may even bo some further delay, because it is i expected that the Department- will have, / to enlarge the dining-rooms at the sta- / tions, where stops for refreshments will' be made. ' ' . '' ■ SPECIAL RACE TRAINS CANCELLED ■ ' /' In consequence of the coal-sa,ving time-table drafted by the Railway .'Department the special train arrangements for the Manawatu races/next week and arrangements for all gatherings similarly situated have been cancelled. . ■ ' j
