Mi'. B. Dolobore Barker, in an article on onions and superstitions in "Tbo Re veil V published in Nairobi, British East Africa, states that years ago, when he was in the Now Zoaland Alp?, he was left in a hut in solo charge'of some thirty sheep dogs. Ono night all tho dogs began to liowl very dismally. Sorao spirit seemed to possess them, aud! they uttered most blood-ourdling howls until midnight. As ho was unable to sloop, lio walked out-sido and 'gazed at tho surrounding rocky crags, aDd' listened to tho reverberating roar of tho snow rivor that'raced along tho stony bod of tho valloy. Suddenly no heardl a shrill cry, evidently a human scream. It penmcd to come from a hut across the vivcr, whore an old gold prospector lived. In tbo morning the old Bran's body wa3 found, brutally, mu-.tila-tod, land hig gold gone.
