RAILWAY SERVANTS' CASES
Ihe third Military Service Board resumed its sitting yesterday. Mr. W. H. 5. Moorliouse presided," and with him were Mr. M. J. Mack and Mr. A. 0. Considino. Captain P. Baldwin was present as military representative.
The Metropolitan Building and Investment Society appealed for the exemption of Charles Leslie Kempthorne Roskruge, clerk. Mr. T. Neave appeared m support of the appeal. Mr. 0. A. Ewen, secretary of the society, gave evidence that Roskruge was the only clerk employed; he had to keep all the books and the accounts pf 010 members. He enlisted about a year-ago, and was rejected as medically mint. He was called up in the ballot and passed the medical test. He (Mr. Ewen) was positive the man was unfit tor service. i The 'chairman: We cannot go into that matter. As far as wo know ho is a, nt man. • Continuing, Mr. Ewen said that a woman could not undertake the work. Captain Baldwin: The Public Trustee .stated here that the wholo of tfce work of his department, except that of a { 6 r V °^ oers ) c °uld be done by women. Mr. Ewen: I totally disagree with fiim. Continuing, Mr. Ewen said it would take a competent accountant about three months to grasp the details of his. society's work,' and a man. less skilled would probably take six-months. Captain Baldwin: If the board sent the man into camp what would you do? Mr. Ewen: We would have to do something. The work must be carried on somehow. ■ • / Mr. Roskruge also gave evidence,, and stated that his twin brother had enlisted and went away with the 20th Reinforcement.
The appeal was dismissed. Mr. F. S. Pope, of the Department ot Agriculture, appealed for extension ?r !' m - e r f ? r Ai W - Christie,:caretaker Motuhi Island Quarantine Station, who had_ volunteered for service. Mr. Pope explained that the work of the caretaker was very important, for he had to be a technioal farmer as well a? knowing how to treat the pampered imported animals, and there had been always a difficulty in finding men lor the position.
The appeal was adjourned for two months, with exemption from military service in the meanwhile. , John Clement Allan, ship's carpcater, s.s. Victoria, satisfied the board that he was not a lesident of Ifew Zealand and therefore not a reservist. The appeal was upheld. , David Stewart, carpenter, employed by the Public .Works Department, appealed on the ground of conscientious objections. Appellant stated he was a Presbyterian, and admitted that h'is Church did not object to military service. It was his private objection to go into the firing line. He thought he would be more useful to the country by doing other work than fighting. The board dismissed the appeal, and recommended that appellant be given non-combatant service.
Harry Hepworth, bootmaker, 99 Nelson Street, Petone, and Charles Leslie Weston,, were eaoh granted two months' exemption on the ground of undue family hardship. TKs appeal of Harold L. Cording, who. asked for exemption until the end of April, .was granted. Railway Men. The Hallway Department appealed on behalf of 147 men in its service for temporary exemption. Of the number 26 had voluntarily enlisted. . Mr. John Bevrn, District Traffio'Tilanager, appeared to support the appeals, and stated that the Department hoped to have the reduced ..rtfflway.. service irt working order by the end' of' next month. The board granted the men exemption until. NATURALISED GERMAN'S SON'S' APPEAL.-
By Telegraph—Press Association. ' Christohuroh, March 23. Before the Military Service Board today 0. ■E.-J-. Stone, wharf labourer, Lyttelton, said that his father .was a German. Appellant himself was born in New Zealand. Ho had four brothers, three of whom were in the First Division. As a result of Ms nationality his father was unable to obtain work oh. the wharves. J The chairman remarked that this seemed rather hard, as the man was a naturalised British .subject, and apparently had an excellent, record. > ■ In answer to the chairman, appellant said he objected to --serving abroad, though he was quite willing to do any kind of home Bervice, The.chairman: "Do you suggest that you have .German sympathies'? You need not answer the question unless you like." " ' ■ Appellant: "Well, "wo have relations in Germany." The chairman:" "Do you correspond with them?" ; ■ ' . Appellant: "My father did before the war." 'Eventually, the chairman pointed out 'that the fact that appellant's'father was a German; v but was a naturalised British* subject; did. not release him from his;obligatibn's'i.'"J The! appeal would he dismissed, but a recommendation would be,made that;appellant beigiven home service. ...
