MARINE ENGINEERS' CASES
The Third Military Service Board resumed its sittings yesterday. Mr. \V. H. S. Moorhouso presided, and with him were Messrs. M. J. Mack and A. 0. Considine. _ Captain. P. Baldwin was present as military representative. The Mutual Life Association applied for temporary exemption for George Stanley Morse, superintendent. Tho secretary of the society (Mr. Richardson) appeared in support of the. appeal. It was stated that Morse had been privately examined and declared unfit, and it" was not until February 22 that the society knew that he was eligible. He waa drawn in the ballot and was passed by the Military Medical Board. The society had since taken steps to replace him. It would take a week or two to get his successor conversant with the business, and exemption was requested for this purpose. _ _ ' Tho appeal was tho military representative undertaking ' to obi tain leave for appellant until April 17. ' Tho Union Steam Ship Co., appealed |,on behalf of the following marine engineers in thoir employ: David M'Donald (Bluff), Oscar Harold Dillucr (Auckland), Charles Edward Lawless (Westport), and Ales John Donn (Wellington). Tho appeals were on the ground of public interest, and Mr. W: A. Kennedy, manager of the local office of the Union Steam Ship Co-> appeared in support.. The cases wero adjourned sine die, provided appellants remain in their present occupations. Private Alfred J. Boden, a voluntary recruit and. member of the 25th Roinforcomsnts. applied fojr_ temporary exemption owing to'tho illness ;o) his wife, who was about to undergo an operation. The board recommended! that appellant be granted leave until the ond of April. , . John Thomas Singer, dairy farmer, Paraparanmil, appealed on tho ground that ho was engaged in an e_ssontiai; industry. Appellant 'stated 'Hint hei was farming a leasehold property of 87 ■ acrcs. The lease had two years .to run: He was 'milking 13 cows just now, and m the season the nuniber milked was 30. the milk was being sent to 'Wellington. He was also a breeder of a milking strain of Shorthorns. Ho was not employing aw labour just now. _ ... i-; The appeal was adjourned smo die, with exemption l from military service so long as appellant continues in his present occupation. - John Frederick 1 Eager, labourer, 14 Nelson Street, Newtown, appealed on the Grounds of undue hardship, and' also that he was engaged in an essential industry. Appellant stated that he had five brothers who had joinedthe Imperial Forces, and ono had died while on active service. Appellant was married and his wife was in a, delicate state of health. He was, at present working at the Ngahauranga • Freezing Works. The appeal was adjourned for _ two y.onths with exemption from military service conditionally on appellant' continuing in .his present occupation. Leave till April. 17 .; was granted Orme Cecil Harper, hairdresser, Willis Street, to enable him to disposo of his business, and John Percy Booth, hoot'finishor, was granted ono month's leave to permit of him disposing of hip stock of racing pigeons. The aopeals of the following were dismissed owing to. the non-appearance of appellants:—Frederick Arthur Carter, architect, 39 Nairn. Street; James Charles Morris, Itactihi; and Frank Cochrane, i civil servant, 9 Millward Street. Wellington. y The hoard will resume its sittings at--10 o'clock this morning.
