MASTERTON MEETING BOTANIST WINS BIG HANDICAP. By Telegraph—Special Corrospondeut. Masterton, .March 16. Tliero was fair weather for the second day of tho Masterton races. The attendance was large, and tho totnlisator handled .CIS.MI, making a total of for liio meeting, as compared with .£31,-116 last year. There were plenty of speculators in the Grandstand Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, but the result was not palatable to backers for a rank outsider in Sardina, by Provocation, took charge soon after the start, and never looked like getting beaten. Baii'nsdale ran a greatlynnproved race to-day, and.beat all but the winner, Outside of the two dividendpayers the rest of the field finished close up. Kukri was chopped out at the start, nnd lost any chance he had.

All the acceptors went to the post for (lie Telephono Handicap. The top weight, Waimatoa, continues in a winning vein, and was able to carry his 9st. in front ■ tho whole way, though after entering the straight Garlysian, the second favourite had him doing his hest right to the post. A few lengths off the post Carlysian had his head in front, but W. Price got his mount up again, and gained a win by a very narrow margin. Lady Black and Lady General were tho next to finish. Brown Study and Tuticorn, owned by Mr. C. F. Vallance, and Mr. F. B. Vallanco respectively, had the finish of the Scurry to themselves. The pair got the best of the start, and followed by Pawerewera, and Crescent Moon they led tho field the whole way. A great finish took place, and Brown Study won by a nose. Pawerewera was two lengths away, and then came Crescent Moon.

Raised lGlb. for his first day's win Eylstone 'had no difficulty in again 'defeating the Bracelet horses to-day. He was allowed to run along, and with Hastie as a companion he led into the straight. The top weight then forged ahead, and won decisively from Hastie, while Lord "Nelson beat Ruatangata for third place. The remainder of the field was strung out down the course.

Perfidy was the best supported of Hie nine ruimers in tlie Waipipi Handicap. Atthe start Tango and Multicipal were badly left, and Botanist went off with ii good lead. Down the hack he increased it, and had the field well strung out. At the half-milo he was steadied. Devotion and Perfidy moved up, hut the leader came away in the straight, and won easily. Perfidy was second and Tango, finishing on, heat Devotion for third place. The finish of the Railway Hack Handicap was very close, and resulted in a head victory' for Comment, with Carlatour, who 'had made most of the running in second place. Merrie Poto was two lengths away, and then came Sabana, .who was very sore, and did not begin with her usual dash. Ngarua stripped well, but raced badly, and so did Kiltess. In the final Welter Handicap Nystad was the hottest favourite of the meeting, and taking charge soon after the barrier rose he was not again headed. Pearl Marie was always in second place, and Hanmakaka just beat Downham, and Brndamante. The winner was very troublesome at the barrier, and refused to ioin his field for some time. B'irkenetta was again entrusted with most support in the Electric Hack Handicap, but the weight stopped her to-day, and she failed to reach the front. At the start Foeman and Humorous led the field, but in the straight Tuticovn camo with a rattle, and got up in the last few strides, Foomnn was a neck Viway, and then came Galore. DETAILED RESULTS.
