IMPERIAL DEBT UNDERSTATED. Melbourne, March 9. Mr. A, G. Poynton (ex-Federal Treasurer) during the debate on the Financial Statement, said the loan just floated would oiily carry the Government till the end of next year. The indebtedness to the Imperial Government had been understated by seven millions bcforo ho took office. Had ho known, ho would have raised the last loan io £25,000,000. Tho total increaso in ta'xaubn would amount to £17,290,000. Australia's war bill, at tho present rato, at the end of 1918 would amount to.£l2s,ooo,ooo.—Press Assn.
