LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING , .
The Lower Hutt Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) and Councillors Hobbs, Heron, Brasell, Meldmra, and Hodgins. The Mackenzie County Council wrote asking for the council's co-operation in the following resolution, which the Mackenzie Council'had passed: "That the Government be asked to impose a Customs duty of not less than 10 per cent, ad valorem on motor tires, the money so collected to he refunded to local bodies for the upkeep of roads, on the basis of the capital value, or such manner as the Government may deem equitable." The council decided to support tho Mackenzie Council, providing that the tax was 10 per cent, additional to the present tax. Tho discussion on the loan proposals was held over till a special meeting of the council, to be held on Monday night. The report of No. 1 Committee in connection with the asphalting of the Hutt District High School recommended that in the event of the Education Board refusing to do tho work, the Borough Engineer should be instructed to put the work in hand at the expense of the borough. The recommendation was adopted. In view of the damage that is being, done to the newly-finished asphalt footpaths and cycle tracks, tho committee recommended the council to employ a man to patrol such works, for the purpose of ascertaining the names and addresses of persons who cause the damage, so that they may be prosecuted. The recommendation was adopted. ~ Miss Welch, of tho Town Clerk's office, wrote tendering her resignation. The council expressed regret in _ acoepting the resignation, and decided to write'and thank Miss Welch for her. past services.
