Sir John Findlay left for Hastings yesterday to enter the field definitely as a candidate for the Hawko's Bay'scat in Parliament.
A Press Association message from Melbourne states that Dean M'Cartby, of Melbourne, has been appointed Soman Catholic Bishop of Sandhurst. At the Victoria College Council meeting a motion 'of condolence with, the relatives of the late Dr. M'Nab, a former member of the council, was passed. '
Mr. Walter Knowles, who retired from the Stamp Department some years ago, is seriously ill at his home in Newtown. Before he ontered the Stamp Department Mr. Knowles was a partner in the firm of Knowles and Hervoy, sharebrokers; and land and estate agents, where the "Burlington" confectionery establishment now stands in. Willis Street, andi before that he was on the stain of tho National Bank.
Lieut. S. E. Lewis, of Marton, has cabled homo to the effect that, he is well again and back to duty in the Sommo, after being four weeks in. No. 7 Stationary Hospital,. Boulogne.
Mr. J. L. Chalmers, of Mount Eden, Auokland, has received! information that his son, Quartermaster-Sergeant H. R. N. Chalmers, has- been sent to Oxford for further training, preparatory to taking up a commission. Mr. Chalmers was educated at St. John's College, being also captain of the college football team. Prior to enlisting in February last year he was on the staff, of tho Bank of New Zealand in Auckland and Fiji. Hβ left Now Zealand as sergeant, boing later promoted on the field to the rank of quarter-master-sergeant.
Referring at the meeting of the Harbour Board ,last evening to the death of Captain J, A. Hayward, DeputyHarbourmaster, the chairman (Mr. C. E. Daniell) said that the board had loafc a very valuable officer. Captain. Hayward was in the board offioe two days before he died, and no one to see Mm could have had any idea that his end' was so near. The staff was the poorer for the loss of Captain Hayward. The action of the secretary in forwarding a letter of sympathy to Mrs. Hayward was approved. The chairman also referred to the loss the community had sustained in the death of the Hon. R. M'Nab (Minister of Marino).
The death is reported at the age of 02 of Mr. John Huffey, one of the oldost inhabitants of South Canterbury. The late Mr. Huffey arrived at Lyttelton C 8 years ago. .
