TRIBUTE TO THE WOMEN OF NEW ZEALAND
MR, MASSEY AND SIR JOSEPHWARD ENTERTAINED. (Rec. July 31; 8.05 p.m.) London, January 31. The National Union of Women's Societies ontortaincd Mr. Massey (Prime Minister of New Zealand) and Sir Joseph Ward (Finance Minister). The speakers included Mrs. Fawcqtt and Lady Frances Balfour, who eulogised the- New Zealand -women's work during the war, and particularly tho movement for the preservation of infant life in Now Zealand. They led the world, the death-rate ill England being 111 per thousand, in Germany 140 per thousand, and in New Zealand 51 per thousand.. '■ ' Sir Joseph Wind said that the movement in New Zealand was initiated l in Dunedin under Dr. Truby King's guidance. ■■ The Plunket nurses had done valuable work. The women of Britain had done such excellent work in free-; ing the men for tho firing line that it would be impossible to resist the oxtension o£ the franchise to them after the war.
