MAGISTRATE'S COURT
TWO LIQUOR CASES
Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M., presided over, a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesJohn J. Harriot, licensee of the Western Park Hotel, in Tinakori-Road, was charged with selling liquor at a time •when the.hotel should have been closed. The person to whom the sale was alleged to.have been made was Malcolm Dickson, who appeared on a charge of being found illegally on the premises on the date in question. The defence, as stated by Mr. H. J\ O'Leary, was that there, had been no sale, but that the licensee had treated Dickson. This lie was permitted by the War Regulations to do, as Diekson was his guest. His' Worship said that the defendants had failed to satisfy him that they were in the relation of bona-fide host and guest. The case was not, however, ono for a heavy penalty. Marriot was fined 40s. and costs, and Dickson was ordered to pay costs, 7s. A. R. Durrant, licensee of the New Commercial Hotel, -was charged with Gelling liquor when the premises should have been closed, and with ■ exposing liquor for sale under the same' circumstances. Mr. H. 1 , . O'Leary defended. Prank Kidman, an employee at the New Commercial Hotel, was also charged with selling liquor during prohibited hours, and Harry Hall, with being illegally upon the premises. It was proved that the sale had been made by Kidman without Durranfs knowledge, and that Kidman might have been under the impression that Hall, the purchaser, was a boarder. Hall was a member of the Expeditionary. Forces, and on the date in question about 40 soldiers were boarding at the hotel. The chaTges aeainst Durrant were- both dismissed,. Kidman was convicted and fined 10s., and Hall was convicted and discharged. OTHER CASES. On a charge of littering a forged cheque at Masterton, Robert Patrick Daley was remanded till January 31. A charge of assault against'Rana Bagwan, who. is at present serving a term of imprisonment, was adjourned till February 16.
George Woodward wae fined 405., with the alternative of 14 days' imprisonment, for using obscene language. Mary Jane Anderson, who, while apparently under the influence of liquor, had used obscene language about 2 a.m. in Holland Street, was fined 40s. In this case also the alternative was fixed at fourteen days' imprisonment.
Joseph Thomas Christie, the' young man who "was recently convicted of stealing. > motor-cycle at Palmerston North, ■was remanded till February 2 on a charge of having stolen a similar machine at Clu'istchurch.
Frank Burke was charged on two informations alleging that he, being a bookmaker, did bet on the licensed premises of the Hotel Cecil. The case was adjourned till February. 1. Arthur Stevens was convicted of breaking the peace in Webb Street, and was discharged. Ho was further convicted of resisting a constablo in the execution of his duty, and for this offence was ordered to pay costs. John Dutch was ordered to pay costs for obstructing the constable. Harry Sunderland was convicted of selling an air guirto a person under the *age of 16 years, and was ordered to nay 7s. 4d. costs. BY-LAW CASES. For failing to notify a change, of ownership of a motor-cycle for the purposes of registration, Jack Urwin was ordered to pay costs 7s.
For riding on the wrong side of the plantation in Courtenay Place Jack Urwin and Jack Maun were each ordered to pay costs, 7s.
For allowing stock to wander at larrre, Matthew Bnbage, Dominion Fish Supply Co., H. H. Knidit, Bobert Henry Hougliton, William Eanson, and Alice Wickman wore each ordered to pay costs 75., while Normnn Clout and Win. Wilson were each fined 55., costs 7s.
For being in chaise of insufficiently lighted vehicles, Benjamin Conner, Claranco Eiggirton, Albert Jones, Win. Manrrin, TCdward Taylor, and Ernest Win. Trongrove were each fined 55., costs 75.. George- Waddle 205., costs 7s. Michael M'Hugh -was ordered to pay costs 7e., and Leslie M'Piko were fined 10s., costs 7s.
For leaving a vehicle unattended in a public place, Charles Stott was fined 55., costs 7s.
For exceeding the fipood limit for motor traffic, Michael SE'Hucli was fined 2(1=.. costs 7s.
For failing to flop a motor-car when ordered by a policeman to do so, Charles Drain wa.s fined 10s., costs 75., while Arfnm Lamb was fined a similar amount, with costs 12s.
A number of citizens who had used the ordinary water supply for tho purpose of watering their gardens without usinn a meter, were cither ordered to pav costs or were convicted and discharged.
