TAXES FOR Y.M.C;A. HUTS
The important question as to whether huts erected by tho Y.M.C. 'Association are liable ~to local rates was'involved in an appeal case mentioned at Wiltshire- Quarter. Sessions-at Marlborough recently. The appeal was by the National Council of the Y.M.C. Association against the Assessment Committee of tho Amesbury Union, regarding the assessment of their huts ' atBulford and other places on Salisbury Plain.' '■:■ ; - , Mr. Ridei K. 0., for tho appellants, stated that this was to have been a test case to determine-'the question whether these huts were liable to local rates or not. The amount in dispute in this particular case, was very small, but the amount involved in connection with' the very large number of huts carried on by the Y3LC.A. came to a substantial sum. They heard from the respondents that they did not propose to resist the appeal, and he asked that the assessment should'bo struck off tho rate.book. ' , ■ Mr. Parr, for. the'respondents, assented to this course, but said he do.sired it to be understood that the matter might be reconsidered should these camps become'really permanent, and should the Y.M.C.A. authorities after the war continue to provide various necessaries and luxuries"!or the troops. ■ ' The Court made an order for the rate to be struck out,' taxed cos'ts ia I be paid by. the respondents.
