The Rib Has Turned. Man—bless him!—has taken the battle.in.the right spirit (says a writer in the "N.Z. Herald"). Nothing among all the marvels of modern invention and discovery, from wireless telegraphy to the aeroplane, has given him cause for greater astonishment or more fervent gratitude than the fact that woman possesses a sense of humour, i It has lightened the world for him, who—poor creature!—was forced to live among women, yet thought himself doomed, Cassandra-like, never to be understood. It has done more to bring' about the equality of the sexes and their mutual understanding than from co-education to the suffrage "movement. It has L-iade friendship between men and women possible, made companions, instead of plaything of kitchen utensils,.of wives, and made chums of young people who, heretofore, could meet only on the basis of frivolous flirtation. At last man is able to laugh with woman, as well as . at. her. The rib has found her sixth sense! What man could take his wife seriously when his cleverest witticisms and most piquant epigrams passed over her head, only to hit against the chandelier, or to return like a boomerang, crushing his vanity in their ' fall ? Fancy, if you can, the bitter shock cf disappointment to a man with a sense of humour, coming home brimming over with,a good story, burning to tell it, getting it off in his most brilliant style; and then, while he waited for the peal of laughter that should follow, watching the blank look of non-comprehen-sion dawn upon his wife's face, and the patient, sickly smile of duty break upon her lips as she answered, ."Well, I don't,see'how that can bo true. Please hand me those pins off the chiffonier, dear." Picture him patiently passing the. pins, as he explained, "But it isn't true,..my.', love. That's what's funny about it." And hear her reply, "Oh, welll why don't you say what you mean? Mother was here to-day, and brought you some quince preserves—" But let us draw a veil! Even women and angels might weep at this. Certainly the modern woman would. Silk hosiery 5 for ladies will he found in excellent variety at Price's Store, 5458 Willis Street.
