MISCELLANEOUS CASES.

Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided over a session of tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. For insobriety, A\ illiam Willan was fined 205., with tlio alternative of seven days' imprisonment. James Wallace pleaded guilty to charges -of insobriety and . committing a grossly indecent act in Vivian Street. He was merely convicted on the first charge, and on the second was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. John Griffiths Williams was convicted of helpless drunkenness and discharged. He was also convicted of using obscene language, and for this offence was sentenced to one month in gaol. For using obscene language, James Ashby was fined £2, ivit.li the alternative of seven days' imprisonment. The language, tho police stated, was used by tho defendant in his_ own house, probably under provocation. It was audible in the street. Michael Head appeared on charges of using obscene language, and driving a vehicle ou tho wrong side of the road in Courtenay Place. On the first charge he was fined 20b.. His Worship remarking that the language was not so bad as that used in the other cases. A conviction only was recorded on the second charge. ' Denis M'Gonagle, a hoary-headed old man, was fined 10s. for being on licensed premises during prohibited hours. . Cecila Parkinson, previously convicted of being idle and disorderly,- was remanded to-day on a charge of habitually consorting with reputed prostitutes. Joseph Thomas Christie was further remanded to January 26 on a charge of stealing a motor-cycle at Christchurch. ' A charge against William Jensen of being the father of an. unborn illegitimate child was further adjourned to January 24. Robert Patrick Daley was remanded on bail to January 26 on a charge of uttering at Masterton a cheque which he knew to be forged.

BY-LAW CASES, ETC. For Sunday trading, Harry Davis was fined 20s. Charles Almao was fined 20s. for selling an air rifle to' a person under the age of 16 years. For failing to notify change of ownership of motor vehicles, AVilliam Fronch was lined 10s., and Ernest Hough 40s. arid costs. For leaving insufficiently lighted vehicles standing in the street, Ernest Samuel French was fined 40s. and costs. For driving a vehicle over a railway crossing at other than a walking pace, Edward John Ross was fined 205., and costs. Frederick Warburton, for leaving a motor-car standing on the railway line at Waterloo Quay, was ordered to pay 455. costs. For riding a bicyclo on the wrong side of the plantation near Clyde Quay, Robert Armit was fined 10s., and costs, and for a like offence Cecil Ballantine was also fined 10s.. and costs. • Ernest Biggs, for failing to have his motor vehiclo properly lighted, was fined 405., and costs. For failing to stop a motor-cycle when ordered to do so, Percy Staples was ordered to pay 405., and costs. Edward Taylor, for leaving a vehicle unattended, was fined 205., and costs. For driving a motor-car without a tail light, Edwin F. Vincent was ilTie3 10s., and costs. Georgo Webb, for driving a vehicle on the wrong side of the plantation in Clyde Quay, was fiaed 55., and costs. C. N. Lewis was,fined £3 for allowing a female employee to work after 9. a.m. on December 22.
