WAR FUNDS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL,
The War Funds Council met in Wellington yesterday, under tlio chairmanship of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. G. W. Russell). Nino members wero present, representing Auckland, Wellington, Cliristchurch, Dunedin and Invcrcargill; and a considerable amount of business was transacted. Tlio disposition of a sum of £22,000 in the, hands of the council was consid-ered,-and! it was decided to place tbo major part of tlio sum on fixed deposit, a balance being retained for present requirements.
' Correspondence was read regarding the administration of Westland patriotic funds, entrusted to tlio council by the Westland Patriotic Society. Tho work was reported! to be proceeding smoothly under tho direction of local committees. A suggestion that' tho council should take stops in tie direction of placing roturncd soldiers on the land was discussed, and action was defenred pending the development of tlio Government's schemes,
The Buller Patriotic Society wrote inviting tho council to tako over tho work in the Buller distriot, on the lines of the arrangement already made in Westland. The council decided to act in accordance .with the request of "tho society. It was decided that, funds should be provided for the purchase of three invalid chairs for the use of returned soldiers in the hospitals
