January 18, 10 p.m.)' London, January 18. Sir Douglas Haig reports: This morning, after a heavy bombardment, we occupied a line of posts northward of Beaucourt-sur-Ancre. ' Our whole objective was gained on a frontage of sis hundred yards, with few casualties. Our observation in this area has been considerably improved. Our artillery barrage in tho afterno.on broke up a counter-attack with heavy losses. The position has been consolidated. Wβ conducted in the neighbourhood of Lens important raids with complete success. German positions southward of Cite da Calonne and westward of Lens were entered late on Tuesday under cover of'a heavy bombardment. We reached tho snpport line and bombed and destroyed dug-outs, inflicting many, casualties. Our losses were small. 1 ' The Canadians at daylight to-day successfully raided north-east of Cite de Calonno, and entered trenches on a front of seven hundred yards by a depth of three hundred to the second line.
