WORLD'S MEAT POSITION
'■'■■■■ PEODTTCTIOjN , FALLING BELOW DEMAND. ~.:.■■ In the year 1914 tho United States v Department of Agriculturo ordered a^ inquiry to ibb.mado into tho meat posi--tion of tho world. The report lias just boon, published. It shows that ' tho '."Unitea States "became a deficiency ' xountry in 1914 and 1915 in tho donies- ] tio supply of fresh, chilledj 'and frozen /.'.•beef, of nil boef in 1914, and also i'u ;..iho domestio supply of mutton in 1914 •.and 1915. Tho deficient production of : i fresh, chilled, '"and "frozen beef was ■■<• 174,000,0001b. in 1914 and 14,000,0001b. in 1915. The deficiency of flio total ".beef and beef products in 1914 was '"'34,000,0001b., or much less than that of fresh, cMlled, and frpzen beef; in 1915, i . tho doficioncy of the'preceding year was by a surplus of 208,000,0001b... . .Tho mutton deficiency of 1014 was 8,000,0001b.; of 1915, 12,000,0001b. Tho ■ surplus of all meat and meat products was 917,000,0001b. in 1914, and i;818,000,0001b; in 1915." -• .-The final conclusion, readsj—"Meat production has not kept rap wfcil the increase bf population in some degree, or with customary demand by meat consumers. The inevitable measure of this changed relationship. between supply and demand is price, and the prico compilations made show that the United " States is not alono in its relative de- ..'. '-clme, but that, it is participating in a world-wido movement. Increased cost ~.. of moat production, also, may be- re- -. garded as a factor. In a world-wide sur- • -vey, it appoars that there is a cutting- ■■■ 'lip of ranges into farms, a continuation of tho competition between range and ' 'farm/by including now range areas, and .'a competition between cheap land and .. ..dear land in the production of beef and .'. mutton. Unless the common farmev is ■'• taught by the scientific farmer how to - produce beef and mutton on high priced • farm land in competition with cheap ■ 'production on range land, it apnears\ that the farmer feels the strength of .'.' the competition; Ho has withstood tho .... competition, however, in a large degree .-'..in the British Isles by reaching supreme excellency, aiid he has avoided competi- .■■•; tion in Germany, France, Austria-Hun- ■; gary, and in some other countries, by means of legislative and administrative •protection." : ; ■ ; The future supply of butter boxes "' was discussed at a conference of reprc- , sentatives of North Island dairy com- ".' paniei, held at AVhangarei last week, "; and (the following motion was passed: ; "That the directors of all associated . companies in North Auckland be asked ■•' to earnestly consider the rapidly-ap- ■ ■' proacbing shortage of white pine tim- ■ ber, that they be asked to prepare •'■ statements of any areas of white pineVj ' timber which may possibly be purchased, to consider the advisability of •'..' forming a butter-box company on similar lines to the Taranaki Butter Box ■■■> Company, and to instruct their dele- ' gates at the conference to be held in ■■• Auckland in June as to what action • they should take' should the question ' of forming such a company then come up for consideration." Tho demand for the famous Victor , Cheese Yats still continues, and orders are being executed in rotation. Mr. Factory Manager, you should certainly get details, of. the Victor sloping bottom, middle drainage Vat—the Victor means bigger output and larger dividends. Write or call. A. J.
