BOWLING CARNIVAL
PLAY IN THE FINAL GAMES HIGH WIND MAKES TRICKY PLAY FINAL OF SINGLES TO-DAY The Dominion Bowling Association's tournament, .which is , no\v drawing towards its final stages, was continued throughout yesterday. The weather was bright, but unfortunately accurate play was often marred by the effect of the northerly gale, which at times blew with such fury that it carried the bowls, meant for ono "jack" closer to the "jack" on the leeward rink, much to the consternation of the bowler concerned, and his exasperated skip. The best that could be said was that it was as. fair for one rink as for another, and, that being the case, the situation was accepted philosophically, for tho winner was always satisfied, and the loser consoled himself with the thought that tho result would have been different had tho wind been less boisterous. The light rain ' that fell on Sunday afternoon, and through the night, acted as a slight stiffener to the greens, and as such was welcome, as fiery greens under such conditions would have been almost unplayable. Towards tlie middle of the afternoon the gale died away, and from 4 o'clock onwards the conditions were perfect. As section play in the championship rinks concluded on Saturday, the play yesterday consisted of the first three rounds, in the gaihes between ties and winners of sections (who were all placed on a level). For that purpose the 41 rinks left 5n were- divided into ten sections of four rinks enoli (five in Section K), and each rink had to pky every other rink (except when rinks with two losses each were to play). It has yet to be decided between Harraway (Dunedin) and Porteous (Wellington) as to who is the winner of Section N, and tho winner of that section has to play Stephens (Kelburn), winner of Section P. Tho winner out of those three was to play Wooller (Remuera). That will decido tho winner of tho first round of the finals. WON BX PICKEEING'S RINK. The final gamo in the Electric Light tournament (rinks) was played on the Wellington Club's green yesterday afternoon, the game being won by (Palmerston North) rink, whioh beat Hain's (Invercargill) rink by four points. The scores were as follow: — Seifert, AVilson, Jones, Pickering (s.), 23; Fleming, Gilkinson, Kennie, Hain (s.), 19. Hain's rink donated their prizes" (£S 2a. each) to tae Patriotic Fund. NOTES ON THE PLAY. Harraway (Dunedin) played a sterling game against Churchward's (Wellington) rink on the Hatait&i green yesterday. On one occasion Churchward lay no fewer than seven shots, in an ordinarily sate position, when Harraway, with his last bowl, trailed tho kitty • with the nicest strength, and lay the shot. Hendry (Hutfc) won. his game against Brackenridge (Newtown) in tho second round with his last bowl. Hutt was one Tip on the twentioth head, and Brackenridge lay one on tho last head, when Hendry was reduced to ono bowl. With that bowl ho drove the jack and lay two, amidst great applause. Tho pairs game between Bentley (Otago) and Foster (Caledonian) yesterday was a fine ono to watch. Both skips were in good form. The clean, smooth delivery of Bentley was much 'admired by the "bank." There was a most exciting finish. On tho fifteenth head tho score was 10 all, and on the final head Bentley was able to measure in one by an eighth of an inch. Smart brought a smart rink down from New Plymouth, which performed in good style throughout the rink competition. He won his first game yesterday, and in the second game with Lawrenson was only ono behind on the penultimate head, on which Lawrensou scored throe. Smart's quiet, clean, placid style waa much admired. Stephens (Kelburn) has, with his rink, played consistently good bowls through the tourney, and his win over that other good rink from West End (skipped by Langsford) in the second round'yesterday was a popular one. Gooder's (Wellington) α-mk, which did very well, were halted in their onward march in the second round yestorday, when they met Spiller's (United) rink. Gooder was 12 to Spiller's 5 on the ninth head, then for six , heads he stuck dead, and from that out Spiller's rink got going and finished 6 up. One rink participating in the rink championship yesterday included a Jewish auctioneer; a Church of England minister, and a publican. When an inquiry was made as to what the fourth member was, a wag said, that he must bp. a sinner. In the, fourth round, (rinks) of F .Section a' win was wrongly credited to Marker (Edgeware) against Chegwiu (Sydnenliani). The result was a win for Chegwin by 18 —17. In the third round of tho rinks vpsterdav afternoon, Spiller (United) defeated Orchard (Christchurch), 29—20. The peculiar feature of tho game between the two Christchurch rinks was that Spiller scored 22 points before Orchard showed a single point, yet in the last eleven heads Orchard piled up 20 points. Wonderful things occur at bowls! Schnauer (Onehunga) is the olily skip who has won every game he has played in the championship rinks — eleven \m till yesterday afternoon. As he won his first two games yesterday, it was not necessary for him to play 'a third. His rink is a fine one, and will bo worth watching in the "sudden denth" finals to-day.
