For the Now Year holiday the chief attraction was the Caledonian Patriotic Fote, instead of sports, which was hold in tho show .grounds. ■ Bain in tho morning spoiled llio procession iii town and out down tho attendance,'which, however, was largo in tho afternoon. His Excellency the Governor and Lndy Liverpool visited the grounds, and the former, opened tho fete.
Tho chief ilpin was the election of a queen. There were four candidates ■representing the eoimtios and Timaru borouph. The result of the election was: Miss .Airiiii Rhodes, daughter of Mr. B. H. Rhodes, Bluceliffs, by cash amounting to £10,15!); the otliers were Mackenzie Levels Counties, .'£SlO9; Geraldino County. £6955:' Timaru borough, £2-538. The total proceeds are not .vet available. The whole is to be divided among the Ued Cross and olber patriotic societies.
