TAKAPUNA MEETING SOLDIER WINS BIG HANDICAP. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) ~ Auckland, November 25, I no lakapuna meeting opened auspiciously to-day. It was fino overhead but wet underfoot, it having rained "heavily during tho night and early in the morning. . The totalisator handled .£27,172, as against .£22,891 on the corresponding day last year. In the Maidon Handicap Bloom ie ran a fine race, and might have won if handled differently. Uncle Ned showed up well, but did not get too good a passage. Kitty Bellairs was made favourite in tho Borough Handicap. She looked well, but ran disappointingly. Tact did not get away well, but in spite of difficulties ran a good fourth. Tho Ponui Hurdles revolved itself into a struggle between Guiding Wajr and Worcester; 'l'Uey wero together coming into tho straight, but Worcester seemed to .boggle at the gap in tho last hurdle, and 'could not again get on terms with Gniding Way. The St. Andrew's Handicap was .Soldier's race almost from start to finish. He won with a lot to spate. To Papapa finished well. Tho heavy going did not suit Tinopai, who was much fancied by the public. In. the Cambria Handicap, Agnestes, who wa9 trained on tho course, shot out from a straggling 6tart, and kept in front till the finish. In the Tiri Hurdles tHe placed horses had their race all to themselves. The result might have been different had tho rider of Brookfield not temporarily lost a stirrup. In the Melrose Handicap, Homeric and Archway showed up well for a while, but could not see it out. Preeminent probably owed his place at'the finish to bis inside position. In the Cheltenham Handicap. Waiuta was apparently troubled by the soft going. Results By Telegraph—Press Association. MAIDEN HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. One ' mile. 7- Carbiness, Ost. The Takapuna Meeting concludes on Wednesday next. - | R. Mason, in charge of Bimeter, passed through AVellington on Saturday en route to Feilding. The Chokebore team for the Feilding Meeting arrived in Wellington yesterday and will be railed on to-day. The Trentham and Porirua teams for the Feilding Meeting will go north this morning. - " Acceptances forf the first day's .handicaps at the AVoodville Meeting, and entries for the Maiden Race, close on AYednesday at S p.m. The hurdle gelding Bill Terry was the outsider of the field when he won the Hack Welter Handicap on the opening day at Timaru. He was ridden bv L. H. Hewitt. The Finn, who won the Spring Stakes at the South Canterbury Meeting, is a brother to Luland, a very successful member of the team which Mr. "H. G. Taylor has been racing in Australia this x season. The Finn can muster up a fair turn of 6peed, but he is a long way below the class represented by his relative. The defection of Depredation from the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna was •a shock to early backers. It transpires that the son of Campfire got hurt while voyaging to Auckland from New Ply- i mouth. Once again Soultane has filled second' place. The brother to Colonel Soult was as usual made favourite in the concluding event at Takapuna on Saturday,' but Munster defeated him, and Deeley's mount had another second registered against him. The - imported horse Layendo, who narrowly defeated Carlita in the C. B. Fisher Plate on Saturday, won the Melbourne Stakes on the opening, day .of the V.R.C. Meeting, and the runner-up on that occasion was also Carlita, while the official verdict was a head victory.: Since joining S. Trilford's team at Washdyke early this year the Obligado gelding Oxenliope has won seven races, including a Thompson Handicap and a Carterton Handicap. It is not. many horses that can win seven handicaps inside twelve months. It is not generally known that the authorities of one of-/the Australian States once sent over inquiries asking for the identification marks of Oxenhope, as it was thought he had been shipped out of the Dominion and was racing on the other side under a different name. However, the inquiries -revealed the fact that the Obligado gelding was browsing on rich pastures in this country, awaiting the expiration, of his disqualification. • / The southern horseman, D. M'Kay, who has been called to the colours, rode Bore to victory in the Hurdles at the Timaru Meeting on Saturday. Nominations for all events at the Stratford Meeting close pn December 6. I . In a recent issue, of the "Australasian," a graceful and fitting tribute was paid to the late Mr. G. G. Stead in the
following terms:—Tiers has never been a better owner or judge of racing in Australasia than Mr. Georges Stead, and he bred most of his horses. He raced for years without changing his trainer. li. .T. Mason, or his jockeys, and never thought of blaming employees when things went wrong. At the Tasmanian Burins Club's Meetins; on November 13, Tuticorn (Sarto— Chinook) won the Elswick Purse Handicap, six furlongs. The yearling fullbrother to this youngster recently went into the Porirua stable.
