THE TURF

OTAKI RACES TARINGAMUTU WINS AGAIN. (Prom Ouv Special Reporter.) Otaki, September} 26. The Otaki meeting finished as it opened ill glorious weather. The racing was good, and some splendid finishes were witnessed. In tho/big Imndicap Taringa- . inutu got up on tho fenco and snatched ■r head victory. An inquiry was held ■ into somo bumping which took place in tho second race, and the jockeys Mansun, Goldfinch, and. M'Donald, wero severely cautioned. A. Oliver and Trainer Jamiefcon were also interviewed by Stipendiary A. Jordon over the Tunning of Splendidus on the first daj. Speculation was spirited, tho total for the day being .i 11,573 IDs. The tumoral' for Hie ttrti.aays was .633,079, as against •£28,940 last year. A field' of nine faced the barrier in tho Trial Handicap, which was voted the •best ofl goo<l things for Ayah.. Tho daughter of . Hermosa saddled up well, and moved down nicely in the preliminary. She started at a very short price, but the issue was never in doubt, and running to the. front- round tho turn, sho rolled, home a very. 1 easy. winner. If (she continues on the right way siioh a beautifully bred filly should bo handy in tho C.J.G. Oaks. Backers received a shock in. tho next c-vout, when a very hot favwirita in Miss De Val got beaten by Glorify. Tho favourite had A, 'bad passage, and got stopped twice in tho-run down tho back. Her rider was then a bit too anxious, and made up the leoway on the turn. In l lie straight Glorify was able to hold tier off, and won by a couple of length*. Kukri also got a bad passage. Sir Wallace and. Roseiand showed-pace in; tho early stages of tho' race, but failed to run on..

Marion was the best backed of the runners in the Hack Steeples, but his big weight found' him at the finish. His perfect jumping had. carried him to tho front early, and. Copestake Todo a nioe race on Mm, but ovor the last fence Merry. Jack tackled him, and beat him home. Ruatangata, was closo up thiid. The winner has previously been successfur in cross-country races, but to-day he was neglected on the machine. The Hound and Kew foil, while Crystal Star and Cron Park ran off.

Tho - big handicap was regarded, as open, but the majority, of backers pinned their faith to Chakwana, who was stripping fresh, and was receiving 121b. from Taringamutu. At the start.Orleans got squeezed out, and when the field settled down Hylatus was showing the way to Want, Chakwana, and Taripganiiitu, Gold Soult, and Merrie Gain. The positions were"lmioh the same into file -straight, where C'hakwana ran up on the outside, and 1 Taringamutu got through on the fence. A-great finish resulted in a win for Taringamutu by a head, with Hylatus a nose in front of G'haiwana. Gold &oult and Orleans wero together next. . ..

Tho Electrii'Hack' Handicap puzzled lackers, and several of tho runners wore ' evonly baclied. Merry Andrew drew the inside, and jumping out smartly soon had a useful break on the Held. Spectral and Jlerrie Poto ran Tip to him at tin turn, but Stowe, on the leader, had a bit in reserve, and after a good finish won by a length. . The other pair were in a lino, and thon came Bnirnsdale, who was flying, and Pearl Marie. Polynesian was again slow to leave tho mark! Stowo, rider: of the winner, had an uncomfortable ride as • the isaddlo slipped back on his mount's loins. For tho Railway. Handicap tho Porirua representative, Goldstream, was a good favourite, while Marimba .was also well backed. The latter drew the outside, but after, going a couple of furlongs plie wasi out in front, and led Menelaits to the turn for' home. Here thor Trentliam hoise 'got/'in"-front, but oyer .'the last bit he went under to Botanist; who scored.by a oouple of lengths. Cold-stream-was running on in-third place, and then "came Murimba, who stopped badly. ' As usual in the concluding event tho speculation -was very heavy.- HaumaIcakawas a hot favourite, and next in public demand came Rongora and Ladify. .The strat was a good one, all jumping out well.. 'Amity was soon in'front, aiid led down the back, but across the bottom Silenus ran up to bini. Next Hastie took charge, but after settling Silenns, Detroit, and Hamnakaka, took a hand. A great finish saw the quartet cross the line in a cluster. The levinowned Detroit won by a neck from Hastie, while Silonus just beat the favourite. Tho last-named got a bad run.

Uongora and Ladify failed badly, but Silenus ran his best race to date. The following are tho clotails of tho racing:— TRIAL HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Pive furlongs. 1 Messrs. V. and B.
