THE PERSONAL CANVASS

POSITION IN AUCKLAND. . By Telegraph—Press Asiocirticm. Auckland, June 26. Only eight persons volunteered to-day for the work of completing the city recruiting Toll by personal canvass. It is estimated that the services of at least 250 persons for three ,weeks is required. The chairman of the committeej Mr. G/unson, states that the first requirement was voluntary labour, and the response to the appeal makes it absolutely impossible to proceed with the proposal. An alternative suggestion which the committee has under consideration is that the work should be undertaken on similar lines to the census, the Recruiting Board undertaking tho cost. The committee is quite decided in the opinion that it does not devolVo upon tho' city ratepayers to provide the money for this national undertaking.
