LOVE'S LABOUR LOST

RECRUITING COMMITTEE'S WORK. . A couple of months ago the Wellington Recruiting Committee decided to give the ■ Recruiting Board's schemo of securing enlistments a fair trial. With tho aid of the . National Register, they sent out cards to. 13,000 men, soliciting the samo information as had been supplied tho Government under a bond of confidence, and which, lias been regarded as such. It •is fair to say that of the-men who answered "Tea" at the confidential call of the National Register, a good proportion have since enlisted, it would only be a limited proportion,, as the eager spontaneous volunteer may now. be accounted a product of tbe past. Of tho 13,000 cards that were issued, approximately _ only 3000 have been returned containing the information desired, but one-third—approximately 4000 odd—have found their way back to the Town Hall via tbo Dead Letter Office. Roughly, the result of the Recruiting Committee's effort is as follows r—Cards posted, 13,000; cards'filled in and returned, 3000; cards returned through the D.L.0., 4250. The cards which were properly filled have been sorted out, and tlie 'particulars contained therein have been noted on a National Register, and when the last of the letters come in and are similarly dealt'with—a few still continue to dribble in—the whole of the cards will be banded over to tbo Government Recruiting Board as tlie result of the .labours of the local committee. "A; good deal of. hard work has been put into the effort," said a member of the Reoruitinp.Committee yesterday, "but I confess; it does 6eem to me like love's' labour lost!"
