THE LATE EARL KITCHENER
Fiold-Marslial Earl Kitchener was bom on June 24, 1850, and entered Royal Engineers in 1871. He commanded the' Egyptian Cavalry from 18814; with Nile expedition, 1884-5; Governor of Suakin, 1880-88; Adjutant-General of the Egyptian Army 1888-92, and Sirdar, 1890; commanded the Dongola Expeditionary- Force, 1896, and was promoted Major-General; commanded me expedition to Khartum, 1898, and was raised to the Peerage; Lo«d Roberts s Chief-of-Staff .in. the South African War and later succeeded to the chief command; after the war he was appointed Commander-in-Chief in India, and in 1910 was. also appointed a member of the Imperial Defence Committee. On the expiry of his appointment in India ha became British Consul-General and Minister Plenipotentiary in Egypt, a position which he held at the outbreak of the present war, an event which recalled him/to the military side of his career, and saw him at the pinnacle of his military prestige —as British Secretary of State for War,
