■ The German attack on Verdun has been resumed with a terrific bombardment, followed up by infantry attacks which penetrated' at two points; in the French line. Els owhero 011 this sector the attacks , failed ivith heavy losses to tho Ger mans. The enemy's activity in Belgium, taken in conjunction wit h his air reconnaissances, is interpreted as an effort to find a weaker spot in the line thaii that which they thought was possible to pierce at Verdun. Ju Asia Minor the Russians are advancing on Bagdad, capturing the enemy stores as they ; extend their lino. A report/ from Bucharest asserts that the Germans arc massing troops near Constantiii ople, and dispatching a Turco-Bul-gariaii, army to the Western front. The general tone of the discission in America on the subject of the latest German Note tends towards 'acceptance of the Note, on the basis qf the essential concossion stated to be embodied therein, namely, th e rules of cruiser warfare to .apply to.submarine warfare. Tlio London "Times" editorial on this subject is far from accepting this, view of the Note. Peace rumours, based upon what is asserted to be authoritativo information, arc -again, being circulated. There is a reference to a message from the Pope, " but at the time of writing nothing had arrived to furnish any indication; as to the exact purport of it. The rebel Countess Markievicz has been court-martialled and sentenced to death, but the sentence has been commuted to penal servitude for life. •
