FAMOUS DIVISION AGAIN TO THE FRONT
HEROES OF GALLIPOLI ON THE TIGRIS HEAVY BATTLE NEAR ' VERDUN ' ENEMY GAINS A POINT SPEECH BY THE GERMAN : CHANCELLOR Details of the British success in. Mesopotamia are to land to-day. Two interesting points are noticed: General Aylmer has been succeeded by General Gorringe; the present position of.tho former is left to conjecture. . The other point is Hhai the division which scored is the famous 13th Division of the new Army which had its baptism of fire at Gallipoli, sustaining very, heavy casualties. The fighting at Verdun, has assumed a fiercer aspect. A-terrific attack has been launched by the Germans at the village of Haucourt, near the west flank of the Verdun front, and after a fearful . sacrifice of life has gained a footing in the village. The French, however, have not been idle, as various messages testify. The British linq has been engaged in repelling a .German attack on the recently-recaptured positions at St. Eloi (below Ypres). The German Imperial Chancellor has delivered a comprehensive speech in the -R-eichstag, Hi which the speaker alternately presented his country to the world-as a peace-lov- . ing, war-detesting nation, and a frightful terror to nations which are ' not oareful enough about- what they say about bermany—Britain, for instance. ' There is a strong and persistent Press .' agitation in the United States for some definite stand by th'e, President on the submarine piraoies. : The European neutrals, also, are becoming uneasy over the toll; of the-pirates. . .
