NEW BAPTIST MINISTER
WELCOME TO REV. J. K. ARCHER. The Rev. J. IC. A rclic-r received a very cordial welcome from a crowded gathering at the Vivian Street .Baptist Schoolroom last evening. Mr. A. Hoby was in tho chair, and read letters and telegrams of congratulation from the Hon. J. A. Hamian, Rev. R. S. Gray (secretary to Baptist Union of N.Z.), Rev. J. J, North (a former minister), Lieut.-Col. Powley, llev. Stanley Jenkins, Rev. Lascelles, and Mrs. A. 11. ■ Atkinson, also a special resolution passed by the Invercargill Baptist Church. : Short addresses of welcome were given ■ by the chairman (011 behalf of tho 1 Church), Mr. C. Cathie (president of tho Baptist Union of N.Z.), Revs. Cook, AY. Hinton, Shirer, Weston, Hunt, Mrs! ' S. Young (oil behalf of deaconesses), and Messrs. Thompson (Napier), Barnett (Invercargill), Nicholson, and 1 Ivory. N i ■ Tho Rev. J. K. Areher, who was i warmly received, thanked the meeting i for the very beautiful welcome. He ' asked what the Christian Church stood I for in Wellington. They should repre- ' sent Jesus Christ, alike in the life of tho individual as well as in business I and municipal life. He realised tho < responsibilities of tho position lie had been called upon to fill, and asked for 41io prayers of the members. He bc r lieved that if there was any difference of opinion a friendly talk woula smooth ' away the issues.' During the evening; Mrs. H. AV. Johnson and Miss Churchill contributed elocutionary items, refreshments being handed round at the close. The singing of the Doxolog.y brought a very successful meeting to a close.
