FIGHTING IN EGYPT

SENUSSL TRIBESMEN SEVERELY ■ PDNMED J MONTENEGRINS FIGHTING DESPERATELY BRITAIN'S TRUMP CARD REMARKABLE STATEMENT BY MR. LLOYD GEORGE The Germans in the TVcsternatheatre have again been foiled in an attempt to break through—-this time at Nieuport, iear the Flanderß coast, where a tremendous bombardment' preceded an infantry attack which was stopped before the enemy's infantry could debouch from the • trenches. Various bombings, mine-attacks, and air-raids are reported elsewhere along-the Western front. In the Balkans tlie Montenegrins, if reports are to be believed,-are again at grips with the Austrians, and a desperate battle has been raging for two days. A British column in Egypt has successfully engaged considerable forcos of Senussi tribesmen. From further to the e'ast, in Mesopotamia, comes news of General Townshend, whose force at Kut-el-Amara, is adequately provisioned, and'for the present is not bbing attacked. Meanwhile the floods in the Tigris have effectively stopped all land operations. Further to the north, in Eastern Anatolia, the Turkish retreat before the Russian offensive becomes more demoralised every day. The Russian advance cavalry is now before Erzerum. Mr. Lloyd George, the Chief Munitioner, in an intei'view, has delivered an important statement— Britain is about to put her whole weight into a prodigious effort to bring about a decision which will end the war. The Compulsion Bill has been read a third time in the Houee of Commons.
