C.E.M.S.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE.' By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, January 19. The sixth aanual conference of Dominion delegates to tho Church of England Men's Society was opened in Napier yesterday afternoon. His Lordship Dr. Sedgwick, Bishop of Waiapu (president of the society), was in the chair, and about 40 delegates were. present. The Bishop welcomed the delegates to Napier, and referred to tho 300 members who had gone to the front and tho 30 who 'had laid down their lives for the flag. Continuing, His Lordship said that all felt that the C.E.M.S. had not risen to the occasion, as was 'deniaJided of it. Ho was not a pessimist, but ho folt that tho C.E.M.S. had not done all it could for the Church at such a timo as this. He would convey to tl\em tho message of the Archbishop, the- motto for 1916, "Go forward." v The Rev. Canon Mnyne expressed dissatisfaction at tho class of men the Church is sending as chaplains with the Expeditionary Forces. "We should do our utmost to send the best class of men possible." lie remarked: "One officer told me that a certain chaplain, preaching to a number of men, dealt with nothing else but reasons why certain colours were adopted in tho Church at the various seasons." (Laughter.) "That sort of thing," Canon Mnyne continued, "is enough to make men get up and walk out. If we are going to send men, let us send tho best; let us send men to preach m men."
