Advice has been received in Wellington stating that the Union Company's new steamer Ao-tea-roa (a sister- ship to tho Niagara), which was launched from tho Fairfield Shipbuilding YeTds on June 20, has-been taken over by the Admiralty, -and named H.M.S. Avenger. The vessel was intended ;for the Sydney-Auckland-Vancouver service, but it wili. be -some time before -She is seen in. the.trade. The engineers on the Avenger have been given Royal Naval ratings. EASTERN PACIFIC SERVICE. The Union Company announce that on account of the trade' between Auckland and the Eastern-Pacific Islands falling off it has been decided to replace the Taliune by tho Flora in the running. The Taviuni replaced the Talune recently, but in. view of representations being made to' the.! Union. Company 'the Talune was put back •in the service. Results have not justified her continuance, however, and consequently ehe haa been -withdrawn, indefinitely. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. G. H. Norman, having recovered from his recent illness,- has rejoined the Monowai as purser. Mr. L, W. Mouatt has come ashore for instructions. Principal keeper Voyle, of Tiritiri lighthouse, and Mr. Turner, principal keeper at Kahurangi Point light, will exchange positions. Well down to her:marks and looking very neat and trim R.M.S. Tainui, of tho Slia-w, Sarill, and Albion Company's 'fleet, cleared Wellington for London at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. She is due at her destination on or about October 8. The motor, ship Selene, it is stated, carried out a voyage round the -world through 'the Panama Canal, travelling 27,500 sea miles in 140 working days. 'The small fuel consumption of the vessel made it possible to do the. stretch from the Gulf of Mexico via China to Singapore -without once refilling her bunkers. - In addition to Lyttelton the Union Company's Rakanoa will make calls at Wellington. and Napier. She left Adelaide on Friday August 20. After landing 1000 .tons of guano from the Seychelles Islands at Dunedin the Norwegian barque Sa-rdliana will proceed on to Lyttelton with the remainder. The small steamer Baroona, at present engaged in- the Auckland coastal trade, has ■been purchased by an. Australian firm for the Ha.wkesbury River trade; The Baroona is a wooden, steamer of 136 tons, 'built at-Newcastle in 1904. It is expected that the vessel will leave Auckland for Sydney in a few weeks' time.. - ■Having completed discharge of tho New Zealand -portion of her London cargo the O. and D. liner Niwaru left the Bluff "for Australian poTts yesterday. "It was announced that the Karamea was ■to have left New York on August 5 for New Zealand ports, via Panama Canal, under the auspices of the A. and A. Line. This should have read Karema. As the South. Taranaki Steamship Com- ■ pany's Kapiti will! be placed on the Wellington Patent Slip for her annual overhaul to-day, it is probable that she will not leave here for Wanganui till Monday at .earliest. . T , , Instead of leaving Wellington for Lyttelton./at the usual hour to-morrow, the departure of the Monowai has been-..post-poned till 11.45 p.m. ' / .' At present the Waoraiu/ Bar is in an unsatisfactory state, and this has caused inconvenience to the regular traders to Blenheim. The Opawa, which had becm, detained outside the bar, managed to negotiate the entrance yesterday. Tho New Zealand Shipping Co.'s Wihakor tone, en route from Montreal, is expected to leave Sydney on Tuesday next for Wellington, via Auckland, _ ' The four-masted American schooner Golden Shore is expected to complete discharge of her cargo of-lumber at Lyttelton to-day. She will sail for Puget Sound to pick up another load of timber for Lytteltonv being duo back there about tho end of this year. It is understood, 6ay6 a southern exchange, that the launoh Wafcine has been purchased at Lyttclton for U6e in the fishing industry at the Chatam Islands. To little vessel is now being overhauled prior to leaving for the fishing grounds. The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s Rotorua left Port; Chalmers for Timaru early yes-terdG-y - morning, and on arrival at the latter port continued Homeward loading. She is due at Lyttclton on September 3, and at Wellington on September 5. De-. parture will bo token from this port for London on September 9.
