ROSS GOLDFIELDS. The mine manager of the Roes Qoldliclds Reconstructed reports as follows for tho week ended January 25:—On Saturday, January 9, a heavy downpour of rain in this district caused several landslips along the water-race, with the result that two soctions were carried away and other sectiona weakened. Tho Diesel engine was kept running as long as possible after tho interruption, but the water began to accumulate behind the underground lock in Buoh volume that tho p cssuro exorted causcd a general leakage into the workings neighbouring thie point. As tho water began to rise.in the low level and tho engine could not with safety carry additional load, the motors and one starter of tho stationary pumps wero withdrawn and the mine allowed to flood. The auxiliary and main water-raccs liavo now been repaired and overhauled, and with the exception of No. 1 tunnel arc again in a satisfactory condition. In connection with No. 1 tunnel a fall had taken place, and tho only way of making a permanent job of this point of weakness on tho race was to bring in a "window" from tho adjoining hillsido.. Thin bas now been done, and tho accumulated debris and boulders from this and previous falls which was threatening to hlock this pn.ssage, is now being trucked to tho surfoco and tho tunnel brought back to Its original size. A start was made to rairatcr tlio mine on January 20, but early on Friday morning during a westerly gale two insnlatara go.vo out on t.he transmission line, and as there is no storage room at thin point in the shaft we had to withdraw the sinking pumps at onco, tho water rising quicker than wo could haul them up. Having dried tho motors another start wos mado on Saturday evening, and we have now lowered tho water 130 feet, tho pumps working very satisfactorily. Tho unwatering presents no groat diJTlcnlty, but progrcra will be greatly facilitated if wo have lino weathor during tho ensuing week. At the time of the interruption somo 501 tracks of wash had been treated for a return of 2907.. !7dwt.
