George Crabtree, aged 25, a private in the Bth Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, who had received his discharge through defective eyes, became depressed and drowned himself in the canal. At the inqoest at Rotherham it was stated that he addressed a.lettor to a friend saying ho was doing away with himself, "concluding with best respects and good-bye." A vcrdict of temporary insanity was returned.. A pleasant gathering took placo last evening 'at the Petono Fire Station, the members of the brigade tendering a farewell "social" to Fireman 0. Lepper, son of.Superintendent Lepper, who is joining the Expeditionary I'orces. Deputy-Su-perintendent Rycfer presided, and there was a large gathering, the Petone Board being well represented. During the evening Deputy-Superintendent Ryder, on behalf of brigade, presented the guest with a shaving outfit and military brushes. A musical programme waa contributed to by Messrs. O'Neill, M'Ewan, Corson, Smith, Wilson, Burke and Anderson, Mr. L. Simpson presiding at the piano. The weather was perfect yesterday lor the annual picnic of St. David's Presbyterian Sunday School, Petone, and upwards of 100 adults and 225 children journeyed to Eona Bay, where an onjoyable outing wqs spent. Numerous races and games were indulged in, and tho gathering row most successful
