SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, January 27. Tho annual congress of the New Zealand University Senate was continued to-day. On the motion of Professor Chilton, tho Chancellor was authorised to make arrangements for the first meeting in 1915 of the Board of Studies after consultation with the chairman of tho Professorial Board. Tho examiners ■ of the MacmillanBrown prize recommended that as tho four compositions sent in were unworthy of the prize, it should not bo awarded this year, and that the subject for 1916 | l)o "We Must Be Free, or Die, to Speak the . tongue that Shakespeare i Spake." The recommendations were adopted. Speaking on the MacmillanBrown prize, Professor -Bight said that the prize did not socm to be well enough known. On the motion of Mr. G. Hogben, seconded by Professor Hight, It was decided to send printed notices of the University prizes to the University colleges; The Finance Committee recommended that University scholars on military service should be allowed to retain their scholarship, and be paid as they fulfil the conditions of their scholarships. Scholarships. Tho interim report of the Recess Committee of the December examinations was received. The committee's recommendations were adopted and scholarships were awarded as follow: — Junior University Scholarships. H. J. Colvin, R. S. R. Francis, H. E. Reynolds; N. M. Richmond, F. L. Davis, M. G. Pezaro, C. F. M. Smith, F. C. Hutchinson, S. H. J. Wilson, and V. W. Holden. Senior National Scholarships. J. E. Learning, R. E. F. Barnett, J. C. Dickenson, W. T. G. Airey, R. Gil-' kison, W. J. Piatt, Edith M. Egerton, Kathleen A. M'Keage, Olive L; Hunt, H. D. C. Adams, Ethel W. J. Fenton, L. H. Marshall, Phyllis J. H. Turnbull, Agnes R. Blackie, D. ; A. N. Mackenzie, L. G. M. Taverner, L. C. Hemery, Valeria Johnson, R. 0. Pago, Dorothy E. E. V. G. B. Clarke, H. F. Taylor. The next five candidates were recorded as having qualified to hold scholarships.. Taranaki Scholarships. C. J. Campbell and G. M'C. B. Salt.' S. A. Wiren (Wellington College) gained seventh place in the entrance scholarship examination, but being under age was not qualified to hold the scholarship. Of the remaining candidates for the entrance scholarships, 59 were recorded as having gained "credit" and also as having qualified for matriculation and solicitor's general knowledge, and of the remainder 40 were recorded as having qualified for matriculation and solicitor's general knowledge. Jean M. Matheson was recorded as having passed in French for the intermediate section of the Bachelor of Music degree. Other Passes. The following were recorded as having qualified for medical registration on the entrance scholarship papers: — R. S. R. Francis, A. A. Reid, R. Gilkison, S. R. A. Graham, C. H. Tait, M. M. Anderson, and H. J. Colvin. Of 1462 candidates for the matriculation examination, Sl6 were recorded as having passed the . whole examination, 101 as having comploted partial passes, and 100 as having .gained Of the remaining candidates, 17 were absent, 56 failed to complete partial passes, and 672 (who had entered for tho whole examiation) failed to pass.
