'■ Advioe has been received of the death in England of Mr. William Shepherd 'Allen, M.A., of Annandale, Piako, at the ago_ of 83 years. Mr.' Allen was a Dative of Manchester, where he was ■born in 1831. As far back as 1865 he was elected to the House of Commons in the Liberal interest. He joined the 'Unionists when the split occurred over the Home Jlulo question. In 1885 he (Settled in New Zealand, and was elected to represent To Aroha in 1890, but was unseated owing to an irregularity. Subsequently Mr. Allen contested the. Parcell seat unsuccessfully. . Mr. Glen Addison, a' member of the well-known Victorian lawn tennis family, who was until a year or two ago one .of the leading players in Victoria, has enlisted in -tlie Commonwealth forces for the war. His elder brother, Mr. _J. J. Addison, holder of many; Australian championships, who was in England at the outbreak of war, was among the first to enlist there. Mr. E. S. Barker, Hamilton's oldest resident, celebrated his 99th birthday on January 18.
