IN PRISON FOR LIFE.
4 A QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT. Mr. Wilford asked the Minister for Justice in the House of Representatives whether he would give facilities for Clnud* Paget, at present confined in his Majesty's gaol, to petition Parliament direct instead of being compelled to petition the Minister for Justice only. Sir Joseph Ward replied: "The prisoner, Claude Paget, was convicted at tho Supreme Court at Wellington in May, 1907, of ninrder, aud sentenced to death. The death sentence was commuted to imprisonment for life, and he has now served a little over four years. Unless it can be shown that the prisoner's case has not received proper consideration at the hands of the Executive Government, 1 think it would bo inadvisable to grant permission to petition Pariisiment. 'i. may add that iu Now Zealand tho Royal prerogative of mercy is exorcised by his Excellency the Governor on tho recommendation of his Ministers, and that every case receives the most careful and patient consideration."
